Blockhead: The Life of Fibonacci by Joseph D’Agnese
Publisher: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR); First edition (March 30, 2010)
Dear Manisha,
It has been a while since I wrote last time. I hope you are okay.
I am writing because I want to introduce a book to you. I am wondering if you have already learnt the Fibonacci numbers yet. If not, do you want to know where the Fibonacci numbers come from? It would be a good choice to read this book: ‘Blockhead: The Life of Fibonacci’ written by Joseph D’Agnese.
When Fibonacci was still a boy, he was called a blockhead because he thought a lot which made his teacher think that he was daydreaming. He lived in Pisa where the leaning tower was built. He saw that the tower needed so much math and he liked numbers. His head was swimming so he did not watch where he was going and nearly crashed into a rock and a lady shouted that he should watch where he was going and called him a blockhead too.
That night his father was mad because the whole city were saying that his son was an idiot and he couldn’t have that. He said they were moving to a city in northern Africa so this nickname could be stopped.
The merchants there did not use Roman numerals as the people in Pisa did. They used the numerals they had borrowed from the Hindu people of India. Fibonacci wanted to learn about these numerals so much so he worked very hard to learn them. One day, when Fibonacci asked his best friend a question and his best friend could not solve it, Fibonacci taught him how to solve it and got a bunch of numbers. On another day, when he(Fibonacci) and his friend were walking by the beach, Fibonacci asked his friend to count something on the beach. He got the same numbers as the first question. The numbers are now known as the Fibonacci numbers.
I hope you would like to read this book.
See you soon,
Clare

Title of book: Peg + Cat: The Pizza Problem
Author: Billy Aronson and Jennifer Oxley

Title of book: Once Upon a Star A Poetic Journey Through Space
Author: James Carter
What is the book about?
Once upon a star, there were no stars to shine, no sun to rise, no day, no night. Until . . . a mighty BOOM!
The Big Bang, the formation of the planets, and the origins of life on Earth are made accessible and fascinating in a poetic, jazzy, free-flowing exploration of space, the solar system, and how we all got here. With its rhythmic, and engaging style, this book is a unique and captivating approach to science and STEM topics that will have kids asking to read it again and again—while learning lessons and concepts that really stick.
Parents and teachers will love it too (and will likely learn something!) as their young ones read about our solar system’s origins in an inviting, fresh, yet factual format. With art that calls to mind the era of the space race, the book is everything you need: hip, fun, engaging nonfiction for today’s young scientists.
Title of book: Tomie dePaola’s The Quicksand Book
Author: Tomie dePaola
What is this about?
Quicksand bringing you down? Kids will love this very funny science book.

This hilarious introduction to an unusual phenomenon from the bestselling author-illustrator of Quiet, Strega Nona, and many others is includes instructions for making your own quicksand– as well as tips on how to escape if you’re as unlucky as Jungle Girl. Boldly-illustrated nonfiction with a strong sense of humor, this classic picture book is equal parts science lesson and entertainment.
Title of book: Count on Me
Author: Miguel Tanco
What is the book about?
A young girl sees the world differently in this beautiful picture book celebration of math.
Everyone has a passion. For some, it’s music. For others, it’s art. For our heroine, it’s math. Looking around the world, she sees math in all the beautiful things: the concentric circles a stone makes in a lake, the curve of a slide, and the geometric shapes in the playground. Others don’t understand her passion, but she doesn’t mind. There are infinite ways to see the world. And math is one of them.
This book is a gorgeous ode to something vital but rarely celebrated. In this little girl’s eyes, math takes its place alongside painting, drawing, and song as a way to ponder the world’s beauty.
Title of book: Math Curse
Author: Jon Scieszka
What is the book about?
Did you ever wake up to one of those days where everything is a problem? You have 10 things to do, but only 30 minutes until your bus leaves. Is there enough time? You have 3 shirts and 2 pairs of pants. Can you make 1 good outfit? Then you start to wonder: Why does everything have to be such a problem? Why do 2 apples always have to be added to 5 oranges? Why do 4 kids always have to divide 12 marbles? Why can’t you just keep 10 cookies without someone taking 3 away? Why? Because you’re the victim of a Math Curse. That’s why. But don’t despair. This is one girl’s story of how that curse can be broken.
Title of the book: Iggy Peck, Architect
Author: Andrea Beaty
